Forming a Peer Study Group

Peer study groups are one of the more effective ways to study for a class. Many students who participate in study groups find it more enjoyable, build new friendships, have a feeling of support in the class, and are more productive.

A Peer Mentor Tutor will be hired (upon request) to assist students who want to develop a successful study group for a particular class. The tutor will help with organizational skills, study skills, making a commitment, and time management skills. The tutor will facilitate the group for several weeks and then monitor the progress.

How to start:

  • Someone needs to take the first step. Ask 4 or 5 students from your class if they would like to form a study group. A group should be no larger than 6 and no smaller than 4.
  • Exchange phone numbers and e-mail addresses.
  • Discuss possible meeting days, times, and locations that will work for the group.
  • Make a commitment to this group. If each person makes the commitment to this group to meet at the designated times, come prepared to the session, attend class, then success will be natural.

Everyone needs to set aside time to study. Meeting with a group on a regular basis will help you to stick with a study schedule.

If you need help in the first few sessions, Tutorial Services (426-1845) will provide you with a Mentor Tutor. This tutor is an exceptional student with excellent study skills. The mentor will facilitate your study group to keep you on track. This tutor is no there to give you feedback on the material, course or professor. If your group cannot problem-solve content, you should either ask questions during the next class or visit with the professor.
